Reporting Suicide in the Media

The Media plays an important role in preventing suicide. How the news media covers suicide can either promote hope and help-seeking or increase hopelessness and the risk of contagion. The Mental Health & Suicide Prevention Team seeks to improve messaging by providing the Recommendations for Reporting on Suicide.

Following the recommendations also apply for online media coverage, social media sites, and blogs. Online media coverage should include hyperlinks to resources, such as suicide warnings and risk factors, or to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline to help inform readers and reduce the risk of suicide.
